“Explicit Consent: Towards a New European Order for Data Sharing?”

How often have you been frustrated when trying to read a simple article or check a recipe, only to be faced with a difficult choice: pay €2, subscribe for €6 a month, or agree to share your personal data with countless “partners”? Sometimes, an option to “continue without accepting” offers a way out, but this often comes at the cost of personalized service. With the CNIL releasing a report on the end of third-party cookies, Google has backtracked on phasing them out, instead pushing for its privacy sandbox to become the new standard.

While the majority of French users still consent to cookies, 68% feel that information on how their data is used is inadequate or non-existent. Over the past two and a half years, the rate of cookie refusal has increased from 22% to 39% (CNIL 2023). This growing fatigue among site visitors could be a golden opportunity to clarify advertising practices, reduce reliance on large platforms, and enhance the value of direct, consented relationships between brands, agencies, and local media audiences. Could conversational AI designed with privacy in mind become the new norm for building trust-based digital hospitality?

In 2019, Brice Rocher, President of Groupe Rocher, emphasized at the Hub Institute the need to shift from customer relationships to customer hospitality as a foundation for trust. The question now is how to apply this digital hospitality in a way that respects personal data, helps better understand anonymous site visitors, and re-engages passive clients. This will be explored in a 90-minute session with French and American experts in marketing, data protection, digital strategies, and AI, focusing on responsible and effective solutions.
